The first entry from Rubber Soul and another Ringo vocal.
What Goes On has a country feel coming mainly from Harrison’s lead guitar. Like some of the other Ringo songs mentioned earlier in the thread it has a fairly static melody, but in this case it is brightened by strong dual harmonies throughout (fantastic throughout this album).
In other respects the arrangement and mix are pleasingly minimal dry and sparse. Typically tasteful.
Rubber Soul is a very cohesive album and although it is not the strongest track What Goes On does its job, hanging together nicely with the other songs. Apparently it was first sketched out by Lennon before the band were signed and later resurrected by McCartney with help from Starr.
‘What Goes On’ was one of John Lennon’s early songs, written before the group had a recording contract and never performed live.
