I Will is a track from the White Album, written by Paul McCartney. Although John Lennon and Ringo Starr appear on the recording playing percussion, George Harrison did not participate.
A love song written by Paul McCartney, ‘I Will’ was one of the songs worked on by The Beatles and their associates while in Rishikesh, India.

When you listen to Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band or Abbey Road, there’s a pleasing variation in the different sounds and genres the Beatles expore, but always an underlying unity. The White Album is at least as eclectic but has an underlying sense of disunity. There were many reasons, discussed earlier in the blog, but chief among them is that they really were more divided. They were working more independently of one another than at any time from their formation until their breakup and relationships between the bandmates, and between the band and the production team, were strained.
I Will is a twee love song with a nice melody, light lyrics and a pretty guitar part. If I am honest it is a bit too sweet for my taste; too much meringue not enough lemon curd. If it was going to be included on a Beatles album, it needed something more, in my view; this is not a stone cold classic like Blackbird or Yesterday, where the song stands up on its own. And yet the other participating Beatles are relegated to playing percussion that adds nothing and, it seems to me, conflicts with the romantic tone of the melody and lyrics. It feels as if they’re being given something diverting to keep them busy – like unruly primary school kids in music class. I’ve no doubt the Beatles and George Martin could have transformed it into something more had they been more engaged. Perhaps George and John playing acoustic guitars and Paul playing bass or piano, maybe some scored instrumentation. What it really needs is more Beatles and less percussion. Alternatively, and this may be the real answer, it would have been a great fit for the first McCartney solo album.
