You learn something everyday, and I confess that until today, when I sat down to research this entry, I did not know that I’ll Follow The Sun, was one of the earliest McCartney wrote, going back to 1959 when he was aged about 16. As the Beatles Bible article<\/a> says, the Beatles made a home recording of a version as early as 1960, and although it wasn’t part of the band’s<\/em> live set, McCartney would sometimes play it between sets during their Hamburg days. The song appeared on the Beatles For Sale album, at a time when the Beatles had almost exhausted their supply of original material, after the wholly original A Hard Day’s Night. Hence, perhaps, the need to dig a little deeper into Paul’s earlier material.<\/p>\n\n\n

I think one of the reasons I had not realized that I’ll Follow The Sun was a very early composition is that it doesn’t sound like something written by a sixteen year old. Indeed the melody and structure are timeless and it would not have sounded out of place on Rubber Soul, the White Album, or one of McCartney’s solo albums. It shows how McCartney was already an almost complete songwriter before the Beatles were signed. The weakness, if there is one, is in the lyrics which are short and sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The production is very tasteful, with the Ringo tapping out the rhythm on his knees (or a packing case), getting a similar effect to that seen on some Buddy Holly and the Crickets tracks, such as Everyday. George Harrison contributes a subtle electric guitar part and solo, and Lennon provides some well-judged harmony vocals. These classy decisions make the arrangement light, airy and unpretentious, and it is a short song well under two minutes. Less is more. As with other tracks on the Beatles For Sale, the recording seems to benefit from improved studio technology and\/or engineering with a beautifully crisp sound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
