George was a natural collaborator and found himself appreciated by others he admired, perhaps more than by his bandmates (especially Paul and John) who sometimes took him for granted and seemed to underestimate his songwriting.

Fellow lead guitarist, Eric Clapton, was one of the first and strongest connections he formed – they had become friends after the Beatles shared a bill with the Yardbirds in 1964. Clapton had come to greater and greater prominence during the late 60s as guitar focused rock emerged as a dominant genre. In 1966 Clapton had formed the supergroup Cream with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce, but they were in the process of splitting up by Summer 1968.

The Beatles Bible

A lighthearted song written by George Harrison, ‘Savoy Truffle’ was inspired by his friend Eric Clapton’s gluttonous love of chocolate.
Continue reading on Beatles Bible →

Wikipedia

"Savoy Truffle" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles from their 1968 album The Beatles (also known as "the White Album"). This was one of at least two occasions where George’s collaborative approach brought other musicians into the Beatles recordings in a way that eased tensions and markedly improved their output (the other was when he later brought Billy Preston into the Let It Be/Get Back sessions).

Some time around this period also Harrison co-wrote Badge with Clapton, and later played rhythm guitar on the track which appeared on Cream’s album Goodbye.

The pair became lifelong friends. It must have been a very strong friendship as it survived a very complicated and long-lasting love triangle involving Harrison’s first wife Pattie Boyd with whom Clapton was infatuated. He remained obsessed with for many years (for example, writing the song Layla about her) before Boyd divorced Harrison and then eventually married Clapton.

Savoy Truffle was recorded in October 1968 toward the end of the White Album sessions.

‘Savoy Truffle’ is a funny one written whist hanging out with Eric Clapton in the ’60s. At that time he had a lot of cavities in his teeth and needed dental work. He always had a toothache but he ate a lot of chocolates – he couldn’t resist them, and once he saw a box he had to eat them all. He was over at my house, and I had a box of Good News chocolates on the table and wrote the song from the names inside the lid. I got stuck with the two bridges for a while and Derek Taylor wrote some of the words in the middle – ‘You know that what you eat you are’.

Musically one of the most striking things about the track is the intensity of the brass sounds. It is a similar close mic’ed effect to that used on Lennon’s Good Morning Good Morning, and it works just as well on this song. Harrison reportedly apologised to the musicians; according to engineer Brian Gibson

The musicians came up to the control room to listen to a playback and George said to them, ‘Before you listen I’ve got to apologise for what I’ve done to your beautiful sound.
