According to several internet sources including the Beatles Bible<\/a> and Beatles Music History<\/a>, Lennon attributed this new direction to a meeting with journalist Kenneth Allsop who had interviewed him in connection with Lennon’s book In His Own Write. Allsop told Lennon that he couldn’t really connect with Beatles’ songs as they were all couched in terms of abstract images of romantic relationships, whereas he could see from the book that Lennon had more offer. Allsop had suggested that he write something more autobiographical, grounded in his personal experience. Lennon later told his friend Elliot Mintz (the putative source of the story – I haven’t tracked down the original quote) that this had been a bit of a turning point in his writing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lennon had also been fascinated by Bob Dylan’s lyrics that were clearly more poetic and ambitious in their subject matter than earlier folk and rock songs: “Instead of projecting myself into a situation, I would try to express what I felt about myself. I think it was Dylan who helped me realize that.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m A Loser was the initial result of the coming together of these influences. It deals with the sense that the protagonist is masking his sadness: “Although I laugh and I act like a clown, beneath this mask I am wearing a frown”, “I’m a loser, and I’m not what I appear to be”, albeit this is still placed in the context of a romantic relationship gone awry “She was a girl in a million my friend”, “Is it for her or myself that I cry?”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musically, the song also prefigures some of their later work. Beatles For Sale is a bit of a hotch-potch; some of the songs (especially the covers) hark back to their Cavern days and the first two albums, some (such as No Reply) would seem to fit well with the recent A Hard Day’s Night, but others like I’m A Loser and perhaps Every Little Thing, are beginning to approach the musical direction that would eventually lead to Rubber Soul and beyond. I’m A Loser in particular has a very Rubber Soulish sound with it’s country-flavoured lead guitar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
