Written by Paul McCartney and credited to Lennon–McCartney, it is a brief tongue-in-cheek music hall song.[1] On the album, "Her Majesty" appears 14 secon…
Continue reading on Wikipedia →

This is another fragment, just 23 seconds long. In truth its ranking in my list is just due to another failure in the underlying rating scheme, it should be really be nearer the other fragments like Maggie Mae.

The story is that McCartney had intended the snippet to form part of the medley on side two of Abbey Road, but it did not seem to fit. So it was cut out of the tape and stored temporarily by affixing it to the end of the edit. This chunk was then accidentally left in when the album was being prepared for mastering. But the Beatles decided to leave it in – they had a long-standing inclination to retain “happy accidents” in the creative process.

The song does have a certain charm. It appears as a surprise bonus track on the end of Abbey Road, and I think a case can be made for its inclusion as a beautiful artistic decision.

Abbey Road was the last album the Beatles recorded, and in my view they clearly understood at some level that it was to be their swansong. Whether subconsciously or not McCartney, being the genius he is, constructed side 2 of the album to be a fitting ending to their recording career.

I mean, The End is entitled “The End” and includes solos by each individual Beatle underneath a chant of “Love You” culminating in the sound of a full orchestra playing a beautiful finale under the words “And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.”

This is a perfect ending.

And then after a few seconds of silence there’s a clumsy sounding crash of a chord followed by a little ditty about the queen.

At one level it could be seen as self-deprecating, British, Pythonesque. At another it is like the fly in Rennaissance portraiture or the deliberate “Persian Flaw” in the design of a rug. A reminder that everything, even The End, is impermanent and only God can make a perfect creation.

Only imperfection that could make the ending of Abbey Road better than it already was.

This is another fragment, just 23 seconds long.
